This class has made me think of things in a different
perspective. Before this class took off I was just focused on reading books and
writing essays on it. Or write essays on certain topics. I was also under the
impression that the essay included a thesis, introduction, 3 body paragraphs,
and a conclusion. But over the few months you’ve introduced to us “our language”.
How we are taught to write a certain way remember in one class you told us to
write in our own language. After about 10 minutes you stopped us and ask now
how many people wrote in their own language actually? Only one person wrote in
their own language. You weren’t too surprised I guess because the classes you
tried this on before didn’t write in their own language. I figured everyone
thought it was a joke and they just wrote how they were taught. What really
amazed me is I didn’t really think about how someone’s language could be
shortened words, slang, Spanish, French, and etc… It is many different
languages that people have that I have never thought of. Doing this assignment
has also made me realize that people are oppressed because they are forced to
write a certain way, however in their own language they may be able to express
how they feel more in their own language.
This class has showed me about hidden narratives. Never once
did I think about the point authors really try to express. For example the
hidden narrative on the “Zero Value” people will get some just because it is
free thinking they’ve got a free item but in reality they are paying more to
get that free item. I have taken things I
have learned in class and actually put it in real life situations. Like work
for example, explaining to my co workers and customers the zero value.
English 214 is different from much other class. Usually you
get graded by one teacher only and there are no revisions. However in the class
I am in I receive grades from 5 different people. Errors some people didn’t catch
another may have. It seems like fair grading. Even if you didn’t receive the
grade you like, you can turn it in for revision and get more help which one
very beneficial. Also doing blogs were helpful too. It was like reflections on
what we did and how we interpreted which I liked the most. I also enjoyed reading other blogs.
All the way in the beginning of the semester when we talked
about first impression and how knowing things about people when you first meet
them rather than months after can automatically judge someone or think you know
someone. I think that made the class actually think about do they really judge
people based on what people tell you, not even getting a chance to know them. Overall
this class has influenced me on what I want to major in and why. I have thought
twice on why I wanted to do something. In the beginning I wanted to major in
nursing but now it has switched to business administration and ethnic studies.
I agree with you, this class has taught us how to look at things in a different way. In a whole new way where we should not judge harshly but try to learn more about the topic or person before putting a label on.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree this class really did change script when it comes to what english is and how it is taught. I really enjoyed this class and what it taught us to do and yes I agree realizing invisible narratives exist even in our majors or places we don't think they are. This also really makes you think about the invisible narratives in your discourse and if you agree. I really enjoyed learning all of this.
ReplyDeleteEnglish this semester had a different meaning for me. Invisible narratives are everywhere and I'm really glad i got the chance to learn them this year.
