JUSTICE
Recently a big story has drawn my
attention, the story with Michael Brown and the police in Ferguson. The real
big issue is police officers are supposed to protect but it seems they are
killing innocent, young black men and are getting away with it. I do not agree
with any of it atall. This has been going on for too long and nothing has been
done about it. Back in 2009 Oscar Grant was unarmed and shot by the BART police
and the officer only served about a year in jail and he was released. Not
everyone heard about the tragedy but a ton of people were upset and they
protested and fought for justice but nothing was done. Allegedlly the NAACP put
up a fight to give justice served but the officer was charged with less than
murder.
A few years later a young African
American male named Trayvon Martin was shot by a neighborhood watched guard and
he died. The neighborhood watched guard said it was self defense but Trayvon
was unarmed and was walking home. The guard was sentence to a few years and was
released early. In these two situations all they had was few years behind bars.
Justice wasn't being served. Some people protested while others showed their
anger byvandalizing/fighting. However although I haven’t seen much change his
family started a foundation in education the youth and getting them involved in
their community.
How many young innocent African
American men have to be killed in order for justice to be served? The killings
of these young men are not helping anything but increasing the number of deaths
of young African Americans. I realized
that every time a situation like this came up, the same reaction came out. I
thought what if the people who have a problem with it approach it a different
way? Fights, threats, and vandalism do not prove a point. Stopping it before it
happens again is what they needto keep in mind. After a few months go past
people tend to forget about it, that’s where they messed up at. Actions speak
louder than words. When Michael Brown was killed many were upset and angry. I
seen all types of post on Instagram and Twitter, but just by posting doesn’t
change anything.
Seeing all these protest and no
progress must mean it is not working. I wonder what the government does to make
a change. I haven’t seen any change. I feel just because they are police
officers they seem to get different rights. Let’s switch it around; if it was a
Black man shooting a White man, the Black man would most likely be looking at
life in prison. As stated by FAU researcher in the Huffpost Miami
the number one cause of death for African American males for ages 15-34 years
old is homicide.
This chart compares all the races and whats the
leading cause of death between homicide, accidents, and suicide.
It seem like racism still exist or
justice isn’t being served. Even if it was the other way around and Black
people were getting away with shooting I still wouldn’t agree with it. Nobody
has the right to take someone else’s life away especially if the victim is
unarmed and innocent. There is so much injustice and people have the right to
make the right choice but decide not to. I do not believe in harming another
person but I do believe everyone needs to be treated equally no matter what the
characteristics of that person is and his/her background. My point is everyone
is human and no one is greater than anyone else.
