Invisible Narrative Placement

I.N's
Over the past weeks we've been looking at invisible narratives and their placement in texts and why they are placed. This is something new to me because I would never look for things like this in writing. I think it is because the things that we would look at and find are things that are normalized in society and even my mind. They are so common that I would not even trip off of them.

That says a lot though. The fact that they are placing these metaphors and societal norms in the texts these papers and you can't even tell they're there. I think its crazy because I am now educated on this and will be able to tell and see them and where they're placed. There are people that are oblivious to them and will continue to believe them and never question them.

I remember while reading the "Egg and Sperm" story I continued to say it Sperm & Egg instead. The fact that it is said like that I felt that it sounded better. But that is just a norm, that the more manly and masculine thing comes first. So this was an eye opener for me because reading the title I thought to myself, "Egg and Sperm? Naw it's sperm and egg!" That just goes to show how that mindset is glued into my thoughts.

In the article it also talks about in science texts how they make the men the savior of the egg and how they make the sperms "journey" so exciting. And how the women's egg is so boring and seen as unimportant. They say that the women are wasteful because they waste eggs every month, but when men release sperm they lose billions! They still label the women as wasteful though. Even in text they are belittling women and their abilities. Even when they give women credit, they are seen to be evil and angry just like they portray medusa. This is a problem because if I didn't read this, I wouldn't have even noticed. The metaphors placed are hidden, you just need to look and they'll be there.

Another interesting story I read that made an impact on my perception was the one about football and war. Man, I never realized how similar the two are! They both have teams, uniforms, are obedient to a leader, words like blitz, and so many more things. It discussed how we as society like the violence and if someone is not hitting hard, we don't like that. It's true though! I know because I love seeing a big hit; its what I look for. The invisible narrative is saying that we accept violence in our society, and we actually want it.

We glorify violence, but it has to be for our entertainment. Some people protest over war and do not like that we are at war. But it is those same people that get together to watch football every weekend! We are such hypocrites! I'm not even gonna lie, I am; cause I am against war but I love me some football!

The scariest part is that these things are placed in texts that we think are true and believable. We could look at a government publication and think that everything they say is true! Word choice and diction is so powerful. The way they manipulate words can be dangerous and a great tool to control. We need to educate all people on this because there are people out there that are still blind to this. I'm glad I am with my eyes open now cause I can now tell what is placed to manipulate me.
