Ever
since I’ve been in the English 214 class, I’ve looked at invisible narratives very
differently. There are some invisible narratives that are obvious to me. For
example, like women gender roles and how men are more dominant then women
because of their gender.
Of course this is easy to spot because sometimes it
isn’t that “invisible”. There are many different areas an invisible narrative
can take place. What I mean by that is invisible narratives don’t only have to
only be in movies or television shows is what I’ve learned.
Since
I’ve been in this class I have been introduced to many more invisible
narratives that I have never noticed. Invisible narratives surround us every
day in our lives. Invisible narratives are controlling a lot of peoples minds
without them knowing. They are blind to it all. I was a victim of believing and
accepting the invisible narratives that I’ve seen. The media does a great job
of showing messages subliminally that I wouldn’t catch all the messages that
were actually trying to be portrayed. Before, I wasn’t disgusting all the
information I was being taught. By now noticing how many invisible narratives
there really are, it has changed my perspective towards the media.
Martins
article, “The Egg and the Sperm”, that the male gender role is more dominant.
For instance, in the title the male gender is portrayed as the stronger gender.
It explains how the sperm is more superior because of what is has to go through
to finally get to the egg. While the egg is just simple and the sperm is more
complex. It made it seem as if the egg needs the sperm, not the other way
around. The sperm was highly spoken about and described a lot more valuable
than the egg.
This also relates to what we normally see through the media. Men
are always shown to come first. The male gender is known to be the head of the
house while the women is simply a housewife. Men are known to have the jobs,
and women just stay home to cook, watching the children, and clean. After
analyzing this reading, it made me realize a lot more invisible narratives in
movies, books, or sports.
An
interesting discussion that I have had in class also opened my eyes. We were
talking about football and how white males are the most important position on
the team. If you think about it the majority of quarterbacks are white men.
When I first thought about this it surprised me. I never realized it. In today’s
society white men are mostly dominant with jobs, government, business, and a
lot more examples. They are portrayed to be the leaders even in something as
simple as a football team. The invisible narrative of this is that white men
are superior and have the lead role.
We need to pay more attention to
invisible narratives. They can be believable and manipulate many people. Most
of the time invisible narratives aren’t really noticeable and are subliminal.
People aren’t really paying attention to what messages are really being
expressed. People see the messages and start to think they are factual and
begin to process it in their minds. I am happy that I am aware of more invisible
narratives that I once was blind too. Invisible narratives aren’t questioned.
They are automatically right to the audience and that’s where the audience
needs to wake up and realize everything they see shouldn’t always be accepted.
Once people start to realize and pay close attention to what they are learning
from the books and stuff they watch on television they will start to detect
what invisible narratives are.
I really like this because you gave us a lot of examples. I like your last paragraph explaining how they look beyond invisible narratives and take certain messages as is and not question it at all. Good work!
ReplyDeleteThis post was really thorough and if I wasn't in the class I would be able to understand exactly what you're learning. The pictures were right on as well and really supported your point of view. Nice job
ReplyDeleteI really like your post because you have great examples and connect your information from what we learned in class. Also as for myself, I didn't really see invisible narrative tile English 214. Also great picture to make your blog more interesting.
