DO u write LyK dis?
Over the past few weeks in class we have been
discussing whether students should write in their own dialect or not. Caitlyn
has also included articles from people who do agree that students should be
able to write in their own dialect. Then it was another article stating why we shouldn’t
write in our own dialect. Hearing both articles really gave me a better understanding
on should we really write in our own dialect. Reading the article why we shouldn’t
write in our own dialect made me also agree with them. Although it may be
beneficial towards writers to write in their own dialect it may be difficult
for the reader to understand. In the beginning I thought it was a great idea to
write in your own dialect because I believe it is easier to express what you’re
saying and you may be able to elaborate more than writing in the standard way
of writing that we our taught. However people write in different languages,
some people shorten their words, and etc… People may not be able to understand what
you are trying to say either because they do not know that language or cannot
exactly understands what point your are trying to prove because of your
dialect. That why I agreed with the last essay we wrote because they do agree
with writing in your own dialect. Also I believe it is not professional 4 ppl 2
type lyk dis. If I was a hiring manager I would not employ anyone who doesn’t have
correct grammar or writes correct English. I am pretty sure anyone hiring wouldn’t
take anyone serious writing in their own dialect. When in class we were asked
to write in our own dialect and Caitlyn asked us once we were done writing who
actually wrote in our own dialect only one person raised their hands and I felt
that was because being taught how to read and write the same way your whole
life its difficult especially in a classroom setting. I think the way I was
taught to write is my dialect because even on my own time I cannot write any
differently than I do in class. Maybe if I am taking fast paced notes it will
not be full complete sentence or shorten words. But for the most part I write
complete words and sentence and think everyone should write the same way. That way
it will not be any confusion on what someone is reading. Although I do think if
people enjoy writing in their own dialect they should write outside of school. Hearing
from others they do enjoy writing in their own dialect.
I totally get it. Im a science major and I understand how important it is to be able to understand people and you cant do that with writing from all types of discourses cause not everyone is part of those discourses. Formal language is so universal but then it excludes the non educated so then again its so oppressive. Over all its very hard to actually come to a conclusion on what writing should look like.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. I personally felt the same way because, I think you are able to express yourself more in your own dialect. However, it would be harder for others to understand our thoughts and ideas.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why some people WrYte LyKE Dis, it literally takes longer than it should and it's a waste of time but as of now it's super rare for people to type like that now its just so MySpace and the majority of people are over that social website. While in Facebook or any social media I see that most people are actually grammar nazis now. It use to be a thing to write weird but now it's a thing to be able to detect bad writing and put the person on blast just for confusing "you're with your. English has become the universal language. Through Facebook or even through phone. I've messaged and talked to people from El Salvador, Sweden, Turkey, Austrailia, Japan and other couple of places and they've all been either good or still working on it but in no way did I ever say to myself I didn't understand what they were saying. Sometimes it does take to read it again or ask them to repeat themselves but we still were able to communicate. I just think that people need to be more patient and understanding with others. Sometimes the pressure of getting through something quickly gets you no where and if there was more patience I feel that more people learning and working hard to learn and adapt to the language would be greater.
