In the last few weeks we have discussed the idea of whether students should be allowed to write in their own dialect. We also discussed what the purpose of school was in terms of writing. First of all, I think the schools are meant to offer the students the same resources to help them succeed academically. However, the purpose of schools cannot be met 100% because the staff running the school influence how the students make use of the resources being offered. First, I think students are taught to write in very similar before they get to college. From personal experience, that can get very boring and tedious because one is not allowed to write a different way. However, this can do good to the students as well as bad to the students. It is good to learn the basic rules of writing because that shows that the students have the same resources to learn how to communicate well through writing. Then when these students get to college they will continue to develop how they want to express themselves. While on the other hand, the way this is taught to to the students before they get to college can make them dislike the whole idea of writing because if the teachers are grading harshly, then the students will think they are bad at writing and they will give up on it.
I think we should look at the idea differently. it is not about whether the students should or shouldn't because I think the students will do so either way. The question should be whether the students are able to fully express themselves through their writing. In other words, the students are able to write fluently in a way that they convey their voice it is just a matter of making sure the students are actually making use of the resources available to them.
I like what you said, it made sense. I like how you gave the pros and cons to writing in one's own dialect, because we need to see both sides of either writing in one's own dialect or writing "white."
